London Race Launch

Bloomberg Square Mile Relay to return to London in 2020

20 November 2019 in 9:44AM

The Bloomberg Square Mile Relay will return to London on Thursday, 24th September 2020, marking the 14th year since the initial race in the capital.

Andrea Mosconi, Regional Head of EMEA Sales, Bloomberg said: “It’s such a fun and inspiring evening which brings together so many different people within the city who are all committed to raising money and giving something back to the local communities.”

The focal point of the race is to make an important and meaningful contribution to each race city in a bigger and better way, through the charity arm of the event called The Extra Mile. This year’s race in London saw over £25,000 donated to support education programmes through the event’s charity partner Greenhouse Sports, working with young people at risk of gang involvement and youth violence. The 2020 event in London will again see 25% of team entry fees donated to another important local cause, focused on using the power of sport to make a lasting difference to the lives of people in the city.

It was another sell-out for the London race this year, as some of the city’s major companies took to the starting line. The roll call included the likes of Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, HSBC, J.P.Morgan, LinkedIn, Macquarie, Mastercard, National Australia Bank, Slaughter and May, Trayport and White & Case among many others.

Feedback for the race was again extremely positive: a participant from Mastercard said “I have either ran in the event or supported a team for the last three or four years and it’s fantastic. It brings out the best in team building with your colleagues rather than competing individually, whilst supporting great causes.”

2019 was a year of several firsts at the London race, as the event became single-use plastic free for the first time ever and the global series pledging to be single-use plastic free on race nights by 2020. There was also the first Fastest All-Female Team award, introduced in each race city in 2019 and in London it was a team from Bloomberg who took home the title.

James Hassett, Managing Director of Square Mile Sport, the owners of the event, said; “It’s great to be returning to our flagship race in London again in 2020 and we love how the city has really embraced the relay. Corporate wellness is a hugely important issue for corporations in the capital and the fantastic energy and infectious enthusiasm the relay brings goes hand-in-hand with companies wanting to improve the wellbeing of their employees.

“We are incredibly proud to be working alongside Bloomberg, positively impacting corporations and the community in London and look forward to many more successful years in the city.”
