Citi wins New York’s Bloomberg Square Mile Relay

18 June 2019 in 3:02PM

Last night, 105 teams from New York’s leading financial companies raced against each other at the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay in the heart of the Financial District in a record sell-out event. Returning champions Citi once again took the coveted trophy and the title of “fastest firm in the city”, completing ten laps of the one-mile route in 53 minutes and 1 second.

Coming in only 10 seconds behind Citi in second place was Macquarie, with Barclays Credit in third place. Individually, the fastest runner of the night, with a time of 4 minutes and 53 seconds, was Jonah Hanig from Macquarie.

The ‘Fastest Mixed Team’ on the night was Morgan Stanley SPG with a combined running time of 58 minutes and 41 seconds. To continue the race’s commitment to increasing female participation across the series, the ‘Fastest Female Team’ category was launched this year, and the inaugural award in New York was won by Bloomberg, who completed the race in 1 hour, 10 minutes and 24 seconds.

Tomas Tjarnberg crosses the finish line to secure the victory for Citi.

Peter Grauer, Chairman of Bloomberg LP, who ran tonight’s race for his fourth year in a row, said: “It was great to see our clients, partners and friends join us in a race that embodies the importance of speed, teamwork, and giving back – three values that we celebrate at Bloomberg. Congratulations to the winning team from Citi.”

It was also announced on the night that, due to a 25% contribution from all team entry fees, US$35,572 had been raised go to towards The Extra Mile charitable program in partnership with 9/11 Memorial and Museum. This is a chance for the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay to make an impact way beyond the finish line and contribute to the local community in a bigger, better way. 9/11 Memorial & Museum will help deliver a year-long funded legacy program to address a cause specific to New York, selected by the runners themselves, on the subject of Education.

James Hassett, Managing Director of the event organizer Square Mile Sport, said: “This year marks a huge milestone with a sell-out 105 teams participating in the New York event – a 100% increase since the first race in the city in 2016. The Bloomberg Square Mile Relay is an unparalleled global sporting event that offers the city’s leading institutions an opportunity to come together for a night of camaraderie, competition, teamwork, celebration and networking, in support of a special cause. We look forward to another sell-out event in 2020!”
