Go The Extra Mile In Your City
03 May 2018
The Extra Mile is a community-led initiative by Bloomberg Square Mile Relay, which addresses a unique social challenge in each city where the race is run. The Extra Mile gives runners and spectators alike the opportunity to make a meaningful and actionable difference to public health, education, arts or the environment of their communities, all through using the power of sport. In New York, The Extra Mile will provide support for kids and their families to take part in sporting activities and learn new ways to stay active using fun equipment and games.
Not only do we run these cities - we care about them, too.
In New York, The Extra Mile teamed up with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum to harness the power of sport to engage local youth from across the city through a series of opportunities truly unique to NYC.
Ahead of race night, volunteers joined "Community Day", which was held at the finish line of the sixth annual 9/11 Memorial & Museum 5K. The Extra Mile special session took place in the heart of the Oculus at One World Trade, where kids and their families got a chance to take part in sporting activities and learn new ways to stay active using fun equipment and games. Kids could also try their hand in other activities nearby, including the NYPD Rock Wall and tackling the FDNY Obstacle Course.
Following race night, The Extra Mile will be working with 9/11 Memorial and Museum to provide kids in sport and social change programs across the city the opportunity to attend a special event that will showcase the museum's special exhibition on sports as well as a session of content highlighting the power sports has to trigger social change.
Volunteers are invited to take part in the summer's special event and are encouraged to participate in special offers around the 9/11 Memorial and Museum sports exhibition throughout the year.
