The Extra Mile is a community-led initiative by Bloomberg Square Mile Relay, which addresses a unique social challenge in each city where the race is run. The Extra Mile gives runners and spectators alike the opportunity to make a meaningful and actionable difference to public health, education, arts or the environment of their communities, all through using the power of sport.
Not only do we run these cities - we care about them, too.
In New York, The Extra Mile has teamed up with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum to harness the power of sport to engage local youth from across the city through a series of opportunities truly unique to this city.
The exciting part is, the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay community gets to participate in giving back.
Ahead of race night, you can go The Extra Mile by joining an interactive session at Community Day, which begins at the finish line of the sixth annual “9/11 Memorial & Museum 5K” on April 22nd. Kids and their families will get a chance to both learn and build relationships with local police and fire departments through taking part in sporting activities. Volunteer on the day and you will have the chance to help kids experience the NYPD Rock Wall, or tackle the FDNY Obstacle Course. You can also sign up and cheer on kids as they participate in a kids-style relay in the main level of the Oculus.
More opportunities to volunteer and give back through sports will be available throughout the year in conjunction with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
We encourage you and your team to go beyond race night in giving back to your own community. With the collective strength of our global races – from those who run in them, to those who cheer them on – we can change our communities.
