July Virtual Hero: Baldwin Emmanuel Choy
14 August 2020 a 7:00AM
The beginning of a new month is a chance to reflect and honour the phenomenal people who went The Extra Mile last month.
In our new monthly Virtual Heroes series, we’ll be profiling the men and women who have clocked up the highest points total for the previous calendar month in the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay Virtual Club.
It’s fitting that our first Virtual Heroes are both from Bloomberg. In this article we’ll be focusing on the number one ranked male in the Virtual Club for July – Baldwin Emmanuel Choy.

“Being able to witness the efforts of everyone globally clocking points for charity really drives home that “we are in this together”.
Mixing up different types of activity
“I had been training for the Boston Marathon but that got delayed and switched to a virtual race in September, so I’ve been religiously trying to clock 15-20km on a daily basis through a mixture of intervals and easy runs. On top of running I try to get myself up to 20k steps daily, though it’s been tough during lockdown.
“The Virtual Club has kept me in check and even pushed me a little bit more during my workouts. I’d make it a point to hit that extra km on my run, especially if I’m already past 0.5km. I’d also go out for more walks to clock those extra few steps as well. It has definitely helped to keep my waistline in check during these “stay at home” times.”
Supporting The Extra Mile
“I simply wanted to clock as many points for charity as possible just like everyone else taking part in the Virtual Club. Being able to witness the efforts of everyone globally clocking points for charity really drives home that “we are in this together”.
Making Virtual Club friends
“I have been bugging my teammates, especially those who I know work out to sync up their Garmins/ Fitbit etc. to clock their steps. I have made new friends from other teams who share the same passion for running as well. One of them (Ingo Wende) was kind enough to give me some tips as Hong Kong transitioned to blistering summer heat while I was pretty used to indoor runs.”
Virtual Club virtues
“I have taken part in several virtual runs but none have been as engaging as the Virtual Club. The Virtual Club keeps me excited with the weekly events (with bonus points), and my peers and I have been checking in on each other to keep ourselves motivated and to keep clocking up more points, all in the name of charity.
“In running we try to find the runner’s high, with the Virtual Club we also get the added satisfaction that our runs count towards charitable donations.”
