Bloomberg Square Mile Relay – Mid Season review 2019

As we are fast approaching the mid-season point for the Global Series with our sixth race of the year taking place in San Francisco next week, we thought we’d look back on the success of the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay Global Series so far in 2019.
It’s been a record breaking first five months, as we’ve welcomed over 100 new companies to the start line in cities around the world, including Addleshaw Goddard, AIG, Dalma Capital, Emirates Airlines, LinkedIn, Rabobank, Reserve Bank of India, Susquehanna and Zurich.
We’ve introduced a new city to the series, Mumbai, and have officially sold-out across our other races to date; Dubai, Sydney, New York and Tokyo.
The Extra Mile
As we announced earlier this year, we’ve reworked The Extra Mile program for 2019 which now means that 25% of your races fees is invested into year-long programs created by our charity partners in each city based on the cause chosen by our runners. So far in 2019 we’ve invested over US$130,000 to such programs, created around our fastest causes in each city, including Education, Livelihood and Inclusion.
Plastic reduction across the Global Series
As we announced at the end of 2018, as an organisation we have recognised the need for us to use more sustainable waste practices and reduce the amount of single-use plastic that we use across the race series.
So far this series, we’ve removed all plastic bottles from site, and have used alternatives such as premium water tanks and boxed water cartons. We’ve ensured that all finisher t-shirts are not individually wrapped in bags, and have significantly reduced the amount of plastic food packaging on site, with no plastic cutlery used at all so far this year.
Record timings
A new race season means new results records, and so far this year you’ve been a speedy bunch! 27 teams so far have cracked that hour mark, and 21 runners have managed a sub five-minute mile – impressive!
On the current leader board, Barclays are leading the way, setting a total time of 51:30 in Tokyo. Our Fastest Mixed Team so far this year is Bloomberg, also in Tokyo who completed their laps of the course in 57:52.
The All-Female Team, our new category for 2019, has been competitive, and Bloomberg are leading the way with a 1:10:46 time recorded in New York.
Individually, the fastest runner so far has been Yoshinori Mera, completing the 1.6km course in Tokyo in 4:35.
